Your main tool for your business will be your computer, and if you’re just starting out then you probably don’t have one of your own. There are several options if you are on a tight budget, like buying used computers from your family, your neighbours, old employers, schools or libraries. Internet Cafe’s are constantly updating their equipment so you can pay them a visit and see if they have something available now or on the future.
Start small. Nobody will come to your house to see if you have the required tools to get the job done. The important factor is to get you started, and once on the road you’ll get the chance to improve in case you need to. For the moment, set aside some money for the minimum required equipment:
– 80 gigabytes hard disk (that’s the memory available to store the software installation and your data);
– one memory card with at least 512 megabytes of RAM;
– a cd/dvd reader combo;
– since you’ll be using the internet, a network card;
– a CRT monitor takes up space but does the job;
– Keyboard and mouse are a must.
Expect to pay around 60-80 dollars for the parts I mentioned above. If you care to look further, there is a chance you can pay as little as 30 dollars.
The specs I show you here are old (I’m writing this on Dec. 2009). I’m telling you this because you can go to a computer shop and probably they can assemble a computer for you with this old specs but the parts can be new. This will cost you around $200 dollars, but you would be asking too much, because those parts would be hard to find brand new.
What you can get from a computer shop, I mean an assembled computer, not one with a brand on it like HP or Dell etc. is going to be around $200 or $300 and will probably be something like:
– a hard disk twice the size I mentioned before
– more and faster ram, at least 1 gigabyte
– a CD or DVD reader or better
– a network card
– a sound system
– a nice LCD display
– a mouse and a keyboard
Maybe you want to spend more than $400 dollars, in that case, you will get more space on your hard disk, more gigabytes of RAM – this is always a plus -, definitely a DVD recorder, one microphone, maybe wireless, speakers and/or headphones or both, you choose. Now that you are willing to spend a little more, your choices now include a small laptop, with the obvious advantage of being able to carry it with you anywhere you go and do presentations to your clients.
So you think that your computer doesn’t fit to well on your living room… give yourself time to get some clients and deliver good content to them; then you´ll get the money to buy more, better equipment.
But, get yourself a computer. Come on, you’re almost there!
